How we reduce and save CO2, waste and packaging
It all started 180 years ago with really good taste and delicious
We want to continue. But not at the expense of the environment. That's why we
our Develey Mantra “Avoid, reduce and mediate.” to our
To make our product world more and more sustainable. This means: We pay attention to
Ingredients and raw materials on regionality, reduce quality losses and
waste. Develey products form one of three branches of activity,
where we act actively and comprehensibly so that you and the
Generations after us taste it.
We can really save ourselves that
- 65 tons of packaging material
- 2,400 tonnes of CO2e since 2016 in the packaging sector
- 30% conventional PET
- 13% weight per 250ml wave bottle since 2016
- 100% palm oil
Regional, plant-based & delicious as always!
WHAT'S IN YOUR DEVELEY PRODUCT
Sustainable practices and environmental protection are often associated with sacrifice. But you know what? Green farming brings real benefits in terms of enjoyment and quality. For us, truly great taste begins right in the field. Our Develey Ketchup, for example, contains only sun-ripened tomatoes from warm Europe. You'll taste the difference in the naturally fruity aroma – and so will the environment, because the shorter the route from the field to the product, the less CO2 is emitted.
“Apart from the fact that we have not used palm oil since 2016, we are increasingly converting our product recipes to plant-based raw materials.”
Michael Durach, Managing Director
And that's despite Develey's mustard, ketchup, and barbecue sauces being such popular accompaniments to meat? Yes, because by replacing animal ingredients with plant-based ones, products last longer, which reduces waste in the long run. Vegan foods also produce less CO2 and are enjoyed by all family and friends with different tastes. You may not have noticed, but our entire mustard range is vegan, as are many of your favorite Develey sauces.
QUALITY – WE ARE CONTROL FREAKS!
The fact that we're increasingly switching our recipes to plant-based and regional ingredients sounds like it's a breeze. But before you can buy a Develey product, it first undergoes a rigorous quality check.

A mustard undergoes an average of 43 analyses and 12 tastings before it reaches your plate. This ensures that we are 100% satisfied with the product quality. And so are you.
We take every care in quality assurance to ensure you can enjoy your meal without worry. This means, for example, that we use only the highest quality raw materials in our production, which we process according to traditional principles but, wherever possible, using modern, green technology.
- Strict purchasing regulations and long-term, reliable partnerships
- Care in the selection, loading & shipping of imported raw materials
- Complete documentation of all critical control points according to the EU directive HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points)
WELL PACKAGED IS LESS PACKAGED
HOW WE OPTIMIZE OUR PRODUCT PACKAGING
Conserving resources, reducing waste and CO2 emissions, and simultaneously ensuring that the packaging remains user-friendly. Yes, the path to perfect packaging is quite complex, but we're taking it and making sustainable consumption easier for you. For example, by considering what you need to easily recycle a Develey corrugated bottle. So we opted for a perforation on the side of the bottle. We're also increasingly conserving packaging material and using bottles made with 30% rPET.
Why is rPET better?
Unlike conventional PET, rPET can be fully recycled without any loss of raw material and produces fewer emissions during the recycling process. Production is significantly more sustainable and resource-efficient, especially since less oil needs to be processed into polymers. Ultimately, however, the main goal is to tackle the major plastic waste problem for our environment. Through closed material cycles, we can counteract plastic pollution. How exactly does this work?

The PET bottles you return are shredded into PET flakes in recycling plants. These are then further processed into bottle blanks. Several factors must be taken into account when determining how much recyclable rPET is used in our bottles. Among other things, availability, food safety, quality, and appearance all play a role. Therefore, we have opted for 30% rPET in all Develey PET bottles.
WE GIVE EVERYTHING FOR LESS
We have set ourselves the goal of ensuring that all our branded products are packaged in a way that is well to very well recyclable by 2025
The topic of "products" is one of our three areas of activity. Feel free to read about our other areas in which we are actively pursuing sustainability.
People: Because environmental protection is teamwork!
Any more questions? Okay.
Why is palm oil bad for the environment?
We haven't used palm oil since 2016, as oil palms grow primarily in areas where rainforests normally thrive. And demand is huge! Millions of hectares are being cleared, sometimes illegally. Slash-and-burn practices not only fuel climate change, but also deprive animals and humans of their natural habitats.
What does the FSC seal stand for?
FSC is the abbreviation for "Forest Stewardship Council." This is an internationally recognized certification system for more sustainable forest management. The foundation was founded in Brazil to combat deforestation in the Amazon jungle. This means that the wood for our labels and cardboard boxes comes from responsibly managed forests.
