180 years of innovation!
Wow, how time flies – faster than mustard from a tube! In 2020, we at Develey proudly celebrated our 175th anniversary, and whoosh, five years have already passed. Boom, 180 years old! It all began very modestly – with a small shop on Kaufingerstrasse in Munich, founded in 1845. There, nine years after the company was founded, Johann Conrad Develey had a brilliant idea: sweet mustard ! An invention so revolutionary that it not only sweetened white sausages, but also our entire company history. The rest, as they say, is history.
1822
Birth of JC Develey
The later company founder, Johann Conrad Develey, was born on February 5th in Lindau on Lake Constance.
He spent his youth in Augsburg and moved to Munich in 1844.
1845
Founding of Develey
Johann Conrad Develey founded his mustard factory on Kaufinger Straße, in the heart of Munich.
In the first few years, he produced medium-hot to hot mustard varieties in the French style.
1854
JCD invents sweet mustard
Driven by innovation, Johann Conrad Develey mixes caramelized sugar and a special blend of spices into his spicy mustard.
The result is a sweet mustard with a new, delicious taste, which is still produced today according to the secret original recipe and is known as Original Munich White Sausage Mustard.
1874
We are “purveyor to the Royal Bavarian Court”
Johann Conrad Develey is awarded the title “Royal Bavarian Court Purveyor” – an extraordinary privilege.
His clientele from the Bavarian royal family includes King Otto of Bavaria and Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria.
1886
Death of the company founder
Johann Conrad Develey dies. His grave in Munich's Southern Cemetery—which can still be visited today—is a gift from King Ludwig II in recognition of his outstanding services.
Johann Conrad Develey’s passion for innovation and pioneering spirit continue to shape the company’s philosophy even after his death.
2014
Develey. This is how Bavaria eats.
Develey is embracing a new face in 2014. Company founder Johann is transformed into Johanna – young, bold, attractive, and rooted in her hometown – a true connoisseur. To celebrate the 160th anniversary of sweet mustard, Johanna will be seen in her mustard dirndl at the S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations in Bavaria's largest cities.
In addition, the Develey Sauces Range was introduced this year and now includes nine successful varieties.
2018
Introduction of the Develey “Our Original” Range
The popular range is being expanded with the Develey "Our Original" Ketchup & Mayonnaise range. In addition to the classic Tomato Ketchup, Curry Ketchup, and Mayonnaise, the vegan alternative "Die Leichte MYO" has also been part of the range since 2022.
2019
German Sustainability Award
A year full of awards: We were honored with the “Axia Best Managed Companies Award” as an excellently managed medium-sized company, Managing Director Michael Durach received the “Entrepreneur Of The Year 2019” award from the consulting firm Ernst & Young, and to round off the year, we were rewarded with the “German Sustainability Award” for our commitment to sustainability.
2020
We are celebrating 175 years!
We are proud of our 18 locations in 10 countries and of being one of the leading and most sustainable manufacturers of mustard and delicatessen products. Our products are exported to over 65 countries. Over 2,000 Develeyans now work in the family-run company.
We are also making great strides forward in the area of sustainability and are setting ever more ambitious goals to become more and more sustainable in the future.
2023
Develey is getting a facelift. In addition to a new logo and new products, the brand's positioning is also changing. This is happening across multiple countries and over 100 products.
